4 Tips For Decluttering Your Home
If you’re busy like me, it is all you can do to get home on time, make dinner, open the mail and do the laundry. On top of that, there are so many other home-related tasks we need to do, yet there never seems to be enough time. In this brief post by American Home Shield, AHS shows us some ways to declutter our homes, freeing up time and space for other things.
1. Don’t get overwhelmed by the idea of reorganizing a large area. Instead, take 10 minutes to tackle a small space – like a countertop, junk drawer or your kitchen table if that’s where items collect.
2. When organizing, practice letting go of things you bought but have never used. Create a “might use” pile, a “donate” pile and a “toss it” pile.
3. Make organizing fun. Visit a container store or a home store like IKEA, Home Depot or Bed, Bath & Beyond that has a storage department. Find containers and solutions that coordinate with your decor and serve multiple purposes.
4. When sorting through items, consider which items might be of use to someone else. While you can’t see a reason for your son’s old sleeping bag or that Mickey Mouse toothbrush holder your daughter had to have five years ago, someone else might consider them great treasures. Plus, in many cases, donating to charitable organizations like the Salvation Army and Goodwill can be tax deductible.
*Bonus tip: Have an extra, over-the-door shoe organizer? Move it to the back of your bathroom door and store everyday essentials there – hair gel, hairspray, hair accessories, combs and brushes, sunscreen, lotion, perfume and more.
